Red Oak Project Management - Norwich Union House

The upper floors of Norwich Union House in South Parade were converted into 88 studio rooms for Nottingham-based students. While the ground floor of the six-storey building houses a pub and a bank, part of the first floor and the remaining floors were completely overhauled to create new student living space.

The prominent building is a well-known landmark in Nottingham and despite its 1950s exterior it also sits within the historic conservation quarter.

The project was undertaken in the very heart of Nottingham City Centre, Old Market Square. The restricted site is above a popular public house and adjacent to a busy tram stop and line which operates from the early morning until late in the evening.

Site-specific traffic management plans were constantly in use, with deliveries permitted only when the tram was not in use. We also liaised with neighbouring businesses -including the public house, nearby shops and a bank -to ensure a smooth delivery.

Early into the project, we welcomed nine groups of second-year Construction Management students from Nottingham Trent University (NTU) on site visits, during which the students gained a valuable insight into how the project programme was structured, as well as how logistical challenges were safely addressed and taken into consideration.
